Important Concept change in Citrix XenDesktop 7

Citrix released XenDesktop 7 in this years. It is a happy news that XenDesktop 7 is likely to replace XenApp (more than 10 years old product). However, there are some important change you have to keep in mind. I just list some important points here.

In XenDesktop 7,

  1. No Independence Managment Architecture (IMA) any more.
  2. No fixed Machine types ( i.e. Pooled, Existing...) any more.
  3. Delivery Group replace XenDesktop 5.x Assignment(Desktop Group).
  4. "Machine Catalog" is a more comprehensive name than "Machine" in XenDesktop 5.x although they are the same things.

To all XenApp people....

In the past, you can publish application and define who can access that application individually.
In XenDesktop 7, user assignment is done  on DELIVERY GROUP only ! You can only define allow who* can SEE this application in "Limit Visibility" box.

* user from user/group defined in Delivery Group. Although you can choose any users/groups not defined in Dellivery Group, it is meaningless.

If you need to assign user/groups to an application, you have to create a delivery group for that application and assign user/group to it. You may find it is waste of server resource.
