If you are a Citrix XenApp administrator or the one who manages Citrix XenApp environment, you must be familiar with "Application publishing". However, you may not know how to select the application delivery method. I know many clients just leave default like below.
Then you will just locate the executable and click "Next", "Next"... oh.. Job done ! Time to sleep!
The bad news is that this box is not as an easy thing as you imagine. Let take a look closer. For "Desktop" and "Content", they is not the main topic here. We will focus on "Applications".
Let's explain what "Application type" means first.
Application Types define how your applications and where your applications run when your users launch them. The options are:
Access from a server
-- applications run on XenApp 6.5 server (i.e. windows 2008 R2)
(Question: how to run on XenApp server? I will answer later this article!)
Stremed if possible, otherwise access from a server
-- this option is the MOST confusing one. Application package (created by Citrix Application Streaming) will run on client machine if client machine support Citrix Application Streaming. If no (e.g. you use iPad), application will run on XenApp 6.5 server. ( Question again: How to run on server ?)
Question: How to run on XenApp Server ?
in the box, do you see a box to select "Installed Application" or "Streamed to server" ?
This box tell you how application run on XenApp server!
Installed application -- run the executable e.g. winword.exe
Stream to server -- download the profile package (created by Citrix Application streaming) from somewhere to run on XenApp 6.5 server.
Get it ?
The last option "Stream to client" is to tell your Citrix client to download the profile package and run it on your Windows PC. Please notes that if your PC is not a Windows machine or Citrix offline plugin not installed, application will not run.
Useful Tips : Add two words ! "Stream (to client) if possible, other access from a server" That will make the world easier ! isn't it?
Notes: Citrix Application Streaming is a technology that allows you to package an applications in form of specific format (i.e. profile) in order to run the application without installing it.
I hope this article can help you clarify on how to choose application delivery method. Any comment ?
